Dolch, Fry's, district required words...AHH! There are so many!
There is finally a way to teach them to all types of students!
(Sometimes the most growth is from ESL students!)
In December two years ago, I had an extremely high number of students who didn't know their Quarters 1 & 2 sight words.
Yikes!!
This was not okay!!
I needed a new strategy that taught the sight words in context and could be tailored to each student.
Each student that needed extra help has a binder with an individualized cover!
(Some of my colleagues love this so much they do it with their whole class!)
Inside their binders are pages with all their sight words listed, a color sheet, checklist, and graph!
(This is great to show parents at conferences!)
Each student also has the current quarters sight word fluency sheet!
This is where the magic happens!
The word is used in context with a sentence!!!
This greatly helps the kiddos who can read a word on a card but can't transfer it to a book. Or the student that finds memorizing sight words, challenging.
If we ever ran out of time, the kiddos would remind me to do a page from our Sight Word Binders!
I ended the year will ALL (praise God) passing all first grade words. My district has 153 required!
